About Hue & Marla

Hue: Marla and I first met in ceramics class in 1976 at Southwest Missouri State University, now Missouri State.

Marla: We were just acquaintances, and I was in awe of the pieces that Hue could throw on the wheel. Little did I know that he had been throwing pots since he was 14!

Hue: We went our separate ways after graduating and didn’t see each other for another 27 years, when we ran into each other in a store. We had both changed so much! Nineteen months later to the day, we married.

Marla: Opening an art school together has been our major goal, and this year we said to each other, “if not now, when?” We named our art school Creava School For The Arts, and after months of hard work, we opened in January, 2015.

Hue: So here’s Marla’s background: she’s a Springfield native and worked as a creative director and broadcast producer in advertising agencies and television in Springfield for over 30 years. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design and a BA in Fine Art, and is a full-time award-winning pastel artist who exhibits in national, regional and local art competitions. In April, 2016, she had a painting awarded First Place in the Pastel National 2016 Exhibition in Wichita, Kansas! She teaches drawing and pastel painting to adults and children, as well as manages the business side of Creava Arts. Marla is also the technology person, bookkeeper and office manager of our business, Parnell Studios, and our other businesses, Faith Vessels Pottery For Worship and KilnDoc.

Marla: Hue earned his BFA in Ceramics and became a K-12 art teacher. After years in school administration, and later, sales and retail management, he became a full-time studio potter. Hue and I travel all over the Midwest selling our work together at fine art fairs. At Creava Arts, Hue teaches wheel thrown, handbuilt and raku pottery methods to our students. Hue also serves as a United Methodist pastor.

Hue: We are both juried members of Best of Missouri Hands and members of Springfield Regional Arts Council. Also, our work is represented by Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ. Marla is a juried member with signature status of the Pastel Society of America based in New York City.
